このボートについて

When we got married and moved to live in Exmouth in 1971, our first “winter letting” was just a few yards away from Exmouth Models!
I bought this new kit then, but moved house several times since then and have still not finished it 😳

The rear cabin roof is now finished and fits OK.

I am not at all sure about the rear cockpit cover with an inflatable mounted on it, so I may have a re-think about this.

The little MFA 385 motor chosen at the time looks a little bit "skimpy" by todays standards, but I am tempted to at least test the model with this motor fitted as I may never get this boat finished if I keep changing things !

Rear cabin roof finally remade and fitted.
Not sure about the inflatable on the rear deck?
This motor looks a bit small.....

This little boat has been a long time in the build - I bought it 55 years ago from Exmouth Models and it has not really had the attention that it deserves.....to put it mildly.

The wood in the kit was dry and hard and of dubious quality - not the best Aerokits model that I have had - and this made harder work of anything than it should have done.

If I had bought this kit today I would have simply drawn around all the parts and replaced them with fresh wood, but back then I had very few tools , spare cash or space to work in, so it just put me off bothering with it.

When I did finally get everything in one lump, the rear cabin roof warped. Something else that put me off bothering - but I had an hour or two at home in the workshop(shed) yesterday cutting and fitting the roof skins on my Sprite Plus, so I replaced the rear cabin roof while I felt briefly enthused .

New formers and anti-warp braces glued onto the rear cabin roof base.
Plenty of clamps used to hold the assembly square while the glue dries.
New skin on the top of the rear cabin roof.

    Lengthist Discrimination !

This boat is only 16” long, but the shortest “tick-box” length available on the Specification chart is 20” long.

I think this is a very “lengthist” selection choice that discriminates against those model boats that are less than 20” long. 😂

    Hi Jon,
People often use a thin layer of fine fibre glass and resin it takes some skill, there may be information on the internet
    specifically on model boats.

This video may give you an idea of what's involved

I have a patrol Launch which I completed as a partly built kit inherited from my father. As it was my first build I was unsure of how to finish the hulls exterior. I painted the hull with body shop aerosol paint, which unfortunately after a sessions use started to peel away in a couple of places. I have stripped the hull back and just need some advise on the best way to finish the hull in order to gain strength, durability and most of all, a nice finish.

Can the members offer any help?

    Many thanks in advance!

The wood had dried-out over the last 50+ years and became harder to work with and bend to shape, and needed some heavy duty restraints (wood screws) around the bows to hold the side skins in place while the glue dried!

Now, the model is fully skinned and has had some undercoat so I will picture it again when it is ready to sail ........hopefully this will not take another 50 years to complete.......
