HI All
Some brush rock crawler motor specs:-
Voltage 7.2 and all rpm's unloaded.
35 Turn 13,000
45 Turn 9,500
55 Turn 7,700
65 Turn 5,500
If you divide the voltage by rpm, you will get a brushless KV rating.
e.g. 5,500 divided by 7.2 equals about 750KV.
Props (Raboesch)
Type D :- 35mm max rpm 10,000
40mm max rpm 8,800
45mm max rpm 7,800
50mm max rpm 7,000
55mm max rpm 6,400
60mm max rpm 5,800
ESC I use the Hobbywing Quicrun 60 Amp for 2-3S lipo.
These have link set up for Lipo and NIMH batteries.
The other link is for Foward/Brake/Reverse.
On boats set to Forward/ Reverse.
This is the only ESC I found that goes straight from Forward into Reverse !!!!

In SA we use a lot of helicopters in Richard's Bay due to the tankers. The pilot boats aren't fast here
Only old in years not mind or soul.

Hi All
I have three Eileen/Hellen fishing boats running 540 Rock Crawler 80 turn brush motors on 7.2 volt Lipo batteries turn a 60mm 3blade prop.
I have trimmed to throttle back to 60% because the boats were over speed !!!
The motors run with no cooling .

We had 2 similar boats here, and they did about 16knts. The old Aust designed tri-hull pilot (1990) had surface drives (1000hp) and did around 30knts (the new cat does 40knts and the new big RIB does around 38 knts.) The big old displacement pilot boats were pretty slow (about 12knts), but they changed to the tri-hull (Waitemata) in 1990 due to having to get out about 12 miles to where the ships waited, and the volume of ships starting to arrive. The Waitemata reduced the travel time from 50 to 20 mins.

Agree, i wanted some wriggle room on prop experiments and to allow ballasting options to get the boat moving realistically through the water ( appearance of weight ) . As i also want duration the plan was to use 2 Yuasa 12 or 6v PB batteries Ah rating dependent on size. Having 2 allows me to use them as movable ballast with them wired in parallel. I think the difference between the 850 and 800 is the 800 provides less performance but more torque 800 at 12v 4289 RPM ( unloaded ) 850 at 12v 9778 (unloaded ). Still un-decided though so any more thoughts good or bad welcomed.

Hi NBT,
All motors make a noise but once the water the sound goes down. An MFA 800 is a big moter I have an MFA850 in my Sea Queen which is 46". Best way remove red gearboc cover just pulls off and spray with white lithium grease quitens it down 👍👍👍

Hi
The MFA Motor Data Table shows the 950D2.51 at 2329 rpm on 6 volts (unloaded) and the 950D61 at 1941 rpm on 12 volts and 971 rpm on 6 volts.
The motor in all cases with the MFA range use a standard RE-385 brush motor rated at 11646 rpm at 12 volts(unloaded). Both would easily turn that prop.

Hi NBT
Pilot boats are supposed to be slow I would use a brushed set up.

Hi All,
Having decided to build the Lesro Pilot i thought about power for it. I want a high torque setup so i can run an increased prop size and or prop pitch blade count. Lesro recommend a standard brushless setup with a 40mm 2 blade prop. I just found in my loft of goodies a Xerun V10 8.5T sensored brushless motor ( 2 pole ) with matching ESC ( quite an expensive setup intended for 1/10 RC buggies ) this motor is rated as 3940Kv with a mximum of 2s lipo. I like the thought of a sensored brushless setup for smooth startup but really not sure about this type of motors suitability, maybe running into a reduction gearbox ? MFA do a nice brushed 540 motor with 6:1 reduction gearbox attached which might be better but as i have the other kit if its suitable it would be good.
