'Home Brew' filler for styrene.

Well I tried Martins styrene shavings and Liquid Poly trick and I can confirm it does work 👍😀but it's a bit laborious and any small amount mixed has to be used right away but it meant that I could carry on for a while.
In the meantime I was able to pick up some more Humbrol filler yesterday from my local shop (Hannants) and carry on with the frame building and filling with that.
Thanks for all your advice and guidance chaps, I may not run out of filler for a while but I'll know what to use if I do 😁.

This Works, but you can also get a product called Micro Balloons. Very useful as it works well with Medium CA for filling😊

Rob,
For a really tough filler that can be drilled and tapped try thin CA and Baking Soda.

Sprinkle the baking powder in to the part that need filling and then drip on the CA.

I have had a bottle of poly /styrene mix made up for some time, and for small gaps I have used a CA and Talcum powder mix.

As you know i tinker a bit with plastic and the liquid poly actually melts a thin layer of the plastic that you are joining and welds it together.

Hi Mike.
I will try Martin's brew to get by with, if I can find a small tight lid bottle I'll try a batch and see if it keeps as you suggest. But I will trot over to Colindale and pick some Humbrol up, with the 10% discount it will only be £5.30 or so and no delivery charges or delays.
I'm getting quite confident working with styrene now, and a well made styrene joint is actually a weld and is remarkably strong.

Hi Rob I found it as cheap on ebay with free postage £5.99 only down side is Monday 9th delivery, however I've ordered it.
I have never used it because I'm very unsure about styrene building, I have all the different thicknesses of sheet and all the different adhesives but I'm never convinced about the strength of the joints. I will give it a go maybe on my next build, but for now Ill "stick" with wood and aliphatic glue.
I'm sure the "bits in the bottle" will work and provided its a very small bottle that you can fill up with bits and Liquid Poly glue so minimum amount of air under the cap it should keep

Could do, but it's always overpriced and postage on top too, and then a few days at least for delivery ☹️
Just checked the Hannants site again and they're now doing a 'click and collect' with 10% discount too so I think I'll do that.

I suppose 'making as required' is best at the moment then. I think I'm too used to reaching for the Humbrol tube 🙄
Hannants is open again on Thursday and assuming they don't close 'cos of the new lockdown I'll try to get some more Humbrol then. Meanwhile I'll use your method so I can keep going 😁.

No i don't think it will keep.
I just try to mix up enough to fill the small gap.
the other thing i do is if possible fill the cap with slithers of plastic first then add the filler mix.

Hi rob,

There are two ways that i make small amounts of plastic filler.
The first way is i scrape the edge of some scrap plastic to produce small shavings them o mix it with a smack amount of Liquid Poly glue to make a filler.

The second way is i cut a strip of scrap plastic about 2 to 3mm wide then put the strip into the bottle of liquid poly for about 2 to 3 minutes then take it out and then scrape the softened plastic and fill the gap with it.

Hope this makes sense.

Hi All.
I've run out of the Humbrol modelling filler that I've been using to fill the joints in the window frames for my Pilots Boat and I tried using some white Milliput that I use for moulding larger fittings as an alternative but it takes an age to harden and cure, especially now that it's turned cold. My local model shop (Hannants) is rarely open and web order will take a few days ☹️.
Does anyone have a good 'recipe' for making 'home brew' styrene filler from glue and styrene offcuts?
I have some MEK and Humbrol liquid poly glue and plenty of offcuts and I don't want to waste too much time experimenting with mixes and ratios.
All advice and suggestions are very welcome 😁.
