Always pays to have a few test set-ups so you can check things the moment you receive them. I always check motors, ESCs etc, as the sooner you find a problem, the sooner you can start the replacement process. Ali Express can make you wait for up to 90 days before making a claim, (this was recently increased from around 60 days) but they and Banggood are quite good with making their suppliers refund for damaged or non delivered items.

Not sure if things will change, as the CCP has put thousands of its own people in as workers after Jack Ma retired from Ali Express, (also infiltrated many other technology companies to 'keep an eye on business procedures' (yeah right!)

HK is part owned by an Aussie and has been slapped with a $2.8m fine required to be paid this year, so who knows what will happen to them (not to mention the Chinese takeover of Hong Kong with associated business interference). Their stock has decreased by about 50% in the last few years so the choices have reduced dramatically from say 5 yrs ago, (probably saving up for the fine😀).

Your persistence has definitely paid off and it's a great result 👍👍😀.
I doubt that it will put you, or many off us buying Hobbyking stuff entirely but I think we have all learned a valuable lesson that it's good to test stuff works as early as possible, and if it don't...kick up a fuss with the supplier and be that 'dog with a bone'.

Well would you believe it. you may remember that I had received a message from Hobby King about a refund for the faulty 90 amp ESC.

"Hi Michael. We have received the letter in regard to the boat ESC. One year warranty on such products from date of purchase. We would advise checking and testing products prior to long term projects. Regards Ian, Hobbyking warranty team."

I wasn't very happy with this response so I decided to pursue my claim, I wrote a number of letters to Hobby King over the last 3 months and finally they have agreed to refund me.

Remember the "Dog", well that was me, a dog with a bone, "never give up"

Got five in service and they all seem OK.

Reverse update, having bitten the bullet and bought another 90A ESC I thought I'd check it ASAP.
So I grabbed the package and with the postman still attached to the package 😁 I wire it up and bingo we have reverse.
The postman said he'd only ever been attacked by a dog!😜

Been watching this with interest as have another Turnigy ESC (HK) that has done the same.
Unfortunately, it is out of warranty so have now binned it. Previously fitted another 50A from Banggood which works fine.
In fairness to HK, they have always settled my claims quickly and fairly.

Well thanks to Rob for confirming that the Hobbyking 90amp ESC was faulty, Rob offered to substitute my ESC in his boat and he has confirmed that it is faulty, so I'll continue the battle with Hobbyking for a replacement. (sale of goods and all that).
I'm very dissapointed with HK dealing with this and will be hesitant about using them in future unless absolutely necessary🤔 sometimes they are the only suppliers at a reasonable price.

Hi Rob that's a very generous offer which I would like to take up and it will definitely confirm whats at fault, because at the moment it could be the card or the ESC. I will post them tomorrow along with return postage/packaging.

Just throwing ideas at you Mike as there are a number of ways different ESCs can be set. The method I mentioned re the centering applies to a number of ESCs (I have 4 Trackstar ESCs which require this for eg). Some ESCs even require you to change a parameter then disconnect the power for 5 secs before changing the next one. The reason I mentioned it was that it is in the HK files section for that ESC, (perhaps someone posted the wrong file?) Anyhow, one last thing to try if you haven't already, (also in the files section)

Hi Mike.
I've used three of these ESC's including the 90A model and none required any initial setup that JB describes. Like you I made all the settings using the programming card that is available for this particular range of controllers and I've not had any problems. My conclusion is also that the ESC might be faulty if all other possibilities have been eliminated.
I'm happy to test it for you if you think that it will help confirm conclusively that it's faulty.

JB,Rob, I have used the program card, I bought it at the same time as I didn't want to be bothered with the Beep,Beep scenario. So I have tried all possible options on the card with no result, and the transmitter is the a Flysky FX-i6x 10ch so sticks type. Unfortunately I don't have any other boats that I could substitute the ESC to test it, I did check out the other 90A ESC in Hong Kong but as you it doesn't specify if its suitable for NiMh batteries.
However I haven't finished with Hobbyking yet.

Hi Mike, It may be the best way to prove its functioning by putting it in another rc boat with different radio gear etc.
I have had problems with the trigger type RC gear!

Hi Mike, just confirming you have set the initial throttle range as per pic, (de chinglishised for clarity) Sounds to me that this could be your problem? Wouldn't want to bin it for something simple😀 Re set ESC to std and try this if you, haven't already, - hope this helps.

Hi Mike.
The downloadable 'spec sheet on the HobbyKing product page says that battery protection can be switched off so you can use NiMh batteries with this ESC. There's a programming card available for it if you you don't want to set it up using the beep tones method.

Sorry to hear of that Mike.
I have only had two Turnigy failures under the warranty period and they gave a credit quickly. I am dealing wih the New York office and have usually found them easy to work with.
Have had several failures out of warranty and just accepted them. Recently started using ESCs supplied through Banggood. The five have tried so far work well and are relatively inexpensive.

I assume then that you have eliminated all other possible causes and narrowed it down to a faulty ESC?
The response from HobbyKing is to be expected I suppose, not very sympathetic though..☹️
Even if they did agree to replace it there's no sock showing in any warehouses 😠
There's an alternative 90A Marine ESC in the Hong Kong warehouse but I'm not sure it's programmable for NiMh batteries 🤔

I did as suggested and contacted Hobbyking asking that under the circumstances (EG stupid me assuming that all hobbyking components are top quality) obviously not.
So the response was :-

Hi Mike, (assuming you already know all this)😀 as this ESC can be used with a pistol type TX or a stick TX, you must use a center throttle position when setting reverse mode on a stick TX, otherwise you will have no reverse range, (if you have throttle forward from the lowest stick position now, this might be the problem).

On some ESCs it's just a matter of swapping a jumper, but programmable ones can be a bit trickier. You will probably have to set your throttle position before using the card. I've attached the HK setting info in case you don't have it (you can find this info in the files section for the product)

'Acceleration' (in Chinglish) is the dead band between FWD and REV, 'Punch' is slow or rapid acceleration (ie soft or hard start) Leave the timing on auto (it's for different KV motors - ie high or low KV). See how you go. Also I'd change to LiPos as you will get far better power to weight and longer running. Your motor is quite large and the boat's quite heavy so you will need to go with a 4s lipo (recommended is 4-5s) of around 2500-3000MaH at least, to get decent performance, as you need a minimum of 16v to run it. As Roy (cb90) mentioned, low power might also be a problem.

This is much easier to achieve with LiPos as you don't have to go up much in size, C rating or weight to achieve a good increase. LiPos hold their power much longer than NiMh batteries, especially with brushless motors.

Thought I would throw in my penny worth.
a/If your Batteries are not charged fully the low power reverse options may not have enough power to run in reverse, try 100% reverse, be careful,
b/Check radio if digital bells and whistles you may have reduced reverse function on the sticks.
The motor needs a relatively high voltage to work (11.1v) I think poor batteries and low reverse power level may have made it inoperable.
Hope you don't mind my suggestions, hope you find the problem.

One quick question. When you reset the values do you press the OK button on the card?
Once you do a musical note should be emitted from the ESC indicating the value has been reset.

Two problems - and two clues😉
Question 1–

Soooo - you are using NiMh batteries, and mistreating them.
So now they are taking their revenge🤔
NiMh should NEVER be topped up!
Before charging always first discharge to 1.1V / cell.
Otherwise you are encouraging the Memory Effect to set in.
This will result in the batteries subsequently only giving back what your last top-up put in.
So a 5 'minuet' (😁) charge ain't gonna last long.
Charging every two months is fine, stops deep discharge happening

OH S**T I just spent an hour describing possible causes for both problems and 75% vanished when I posted☹️😠 I'll do it again tomorrow.😭

Now to the down side of the first voyage, first of all the battery life was not as long as expected – 10 mins
I did make sure the batteries were fully charged this was done with batteries in situ and in series I set the charger at 5.0 A charge rate and it only took five minuets or so to top up as I have been charging them every 2 months. They are 2X 9.6V 50000 mah giving a voltage of 19.2V the charger appeared to function correctly and is rated to charge this size of battery. Based on the first trials mostly being run at zero to full power runs and a little pottering around in between, are there any answer's to :-
Question 1– is this what is expected? If so would LiPo be an alternative

Question 2 No reverse – I am using the
"HobbyKing 90A Boat ESC 4A SBEC" water cooled

The motor is a brushless again Turnigy
Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 5045-660KV Brushless Out-runner Motor.

I have programmed the ESC with the Hobby King Program Card to what I thought to be the correct settings with some alterations to the recommended as suggested by other users, however this still eludes reverse, the settings I have used are as follows :- "xxx" items are my settings

Programming Functions:
Running Mode: Forward with brake / "Forward and reverse with brake" / "Forward and reverse" (tried both these)
Acceleration: 6% / "9%" / 12% (not sure what this does?)
Low Voltage Protection: "None" / 2.6 V / 2.8 V / 3.0 V / 3.2 V / 3.4 V (suggested setting as using NiMH batteries)
Start Mode (Punch): Level 1 / Level 2 / Level 3 / "Level 4" / Level 5 / Level 6 / Level 7 / Level 8 / Level 9
Reverse Force: "25%" / "50%" / 75% / 100% (tried both these)
Timing: 0° / 5° / 10° / 15° / "20°" / 25° / 30° / "Automatic" (tried both these)

None of the combinations seemed to make any difference, So my any suggestions as what I try next would be greatly received.
