Hi Ed and Colin, thanks for your promp replies in helping me decide. Ihad sort of come to the same conclusion but reassurance from experienced sailors is always welcome. Iwill put an order in to cornwall models tomorrow morning.

Which motor

Hi Neil I have a 49inch tug which uses a 540 motor with 2.5 to 1 reduction box. 3inch 4 blade prop, On 12 volts pushes along nicely and with a 7amp hour battery gives about 2 hours sailing, total sailing weight is 21 kilos.

Hi Neil,

I use MFA/ComoDrill Torpedo 500.
On my Tugs and they have enough power!
I use the 2.5:1 g/box at 12 volts.
It gives about 13350 rpm's

Which motor

Could someone advise on which motor to use in a smit amsterdam tug of approx 40 ins long with a 4 blade 3 ins dia. Prop and 4 mm. shaft, I want to run on 12v sealed lead acid battery. I am not going to tow anything but would still like a bit of power.
